The Express Advocate had joined with health, education and civic leaders to call on the state and federal government to help fund the Central Coast Medical School and Research Institute at Gosford Hospital.

If one is suffering from a chronic illness in Tasmania, specialist doctors from the island state will have the authority to prescribe medical marijuana from 2017. This has been made possible by a plan announced by Health Minister Michael Ferguson and Premier Will Hodgman.

 

The plan will allow broader application of medicinal cannabis in Tasmania under Tasmania’s Controlled Access Scheme than that proposed by Victoria, which has limited medicinal cannabis use to a single class of patient. Thus, patients will be allowed the “healing touch” without changes in the law.

The patient was fighting for his life, and without a special lung and heart procedure called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation he would die.

 

The equipment was not available at the hospital in the town of Bodo in central Norway, where he was being treated.

 

But a hospital in Trondheim, about 450 kilometres to the south, did have the machine and staff there contacted the air force on April 4 for help in transporting it.

Two doctor groups in Adelaide say they have surveyed members and found more opposition to planned public health changes in South Australia than the State Government suggests.

 

"These are massive changes that the Government is proposing to undertake. Whether you agree with them or not, they need to be properly planned for," Dr David Pope of the SA Salaried Medical Officers Association said.

And if you've had more than a month on sick leave, is it unreasonable for your bosses to threaten you with dismissal unless you give them more details or pass on your doctor's phone number?

 

In a recent finding, the Fair Work Commission ruled that in both of these instances it is unreasonable for an employer to make these demands of an employee.

Their experience will be familiar to thousands of other families in regional Australia, who live outside major cities and away from specialist medical services.

 

Aaron Loganathan, 10, was diagnosed with a rare heart defect last year. His family credits the lifesaving diagnosis to the Top End’s only paediatric cardiologist Bo Remenyi.

A state-of-the-art training device will allow regional medical students to undergo training for autopsies on a life-size virtual dissection table, removing the need for human cadavers.

 

The US-made Anatomage device, revealed on Tuesday by Flinders University, uses 3D technology to replicate every muscle, vein and bone in the human body.

 

Staff and students are able to view the body from every possible angle and peel back layers of skin and muscle with the simple flick of a finger.

As the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) grapples with how it will move paper medical records from its current site to be available to staff once the new hospital opens, a records agency estimates there could be up to 400,000 paper files from the past two years alone.

 

Health Information Management Association president Jennifer Gilder told 891 ABC Adelaide there were protocols for how long medical records had to be kept.

More than 400 medicines will drop in price from this weekend, saving consumers around $20 each time they head to the pharmacy to pick up their prescriptions for conditions ranging from cholesterol to high blood pressure.

 

Last year Federal Parliament passed the Government's Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme changes, which included an agreement to cut costs in the production of some of the nation's most commonly prescribed drugs.

Australians are expected to consume as much as 8000kg of medical cannabis worth $100 million in just the first year of being legalised, according to a study by the University of Sydney.

 

The figure, contained in a white paper produced by the University of Sydney Business School and medical cannabis company MGC Pharmaceuticals, is based on data from existing markets including Israel, Canada and the Netherlands.

A NSW medical herbalist who talked a terminally ill patient into believing his costly herbs would cure her cancer in just weeks has been stripped of his licence after being deemed a risk to the public.

 

The Health Care Complaints Commission ban comes after Ian Pile told a woman suffering from metastatic colorectal cancer that she would be "cured in a couple of weeks" if she took an expensive cocktail of herbs he had prescribed.

An increasing number of Australian teenage girls have “genital anatomy anxiety” and are requesting genital cosmetic surgery to alter “normal” bodyparts, according to alarming new research.

 

The survey of 443 Australian GPs found a third have seen patients aged below 18 wanting to trim or shape their genitalia. Almost all the doctors surveyed said they had seen women of all ages express concerns about the appearance of their genitalia.

Medical files belonging to at least a dozen patients have allegedly been stolen from a Melbourne GP clinic and dumped in a park, exposing people's most intimate personal history.

 

The privacy breach also puts the patients at risk of identity theft because the files included their full name, address, date of birth, medicare number, and medical history. The documents were so comprehensive they included details about who the people lived with and what medications they were on.

Children with severe epilepsy will be given first access to medicinal cannabis from early 2017, following the passing of the Access to Medicinal Cannabis Bill 2015 on Tuesday, a state government statement says.
